After a few years of absent on doing scout camps, this year from 6th to 7th of June, it was held again for the first time in a while. Just one day after the final exams were finished, the students was then greeted again with a fun physical activity by spending overnight camping out in the school’s grass field. This event was organized by a few of the students who were a part of SMA Pembangunan Jaya Sidoarjo’s Scout’s organization, named “Dewan Ambalan Jayakarta” who are later at the end of the event will be given the title “Bantara” on the camp’s closing ceremony for completing few spesific scout tasks.
The PJ Roverscout Camp started at midday on Thursday. The first part of the two-day event was the opening ceremony under the bright and incredibly warm sunlight. And then, it was followed by the next activity which is for the students to build up the tents in which they’re going to be staying in for the night together with their assigned group. The next session was a seminar and a few fun games with twists of scout elements. And when the sun started to dissapear, the students were starting to prepare their stoves and cooking stations to make a meal for dinner. The meals made by the students for dinner were rather interesting and various, ranging from instant noodles, pastas, traditional soup, instant cream soup, all the way to fried corned beef, but nevertheless the students seemed to have been enjoying their time having dinner outdoors under the star-jeweled ceiling. As the night progressed, singings, guitar strums and dance musics were heard across the field as the students prepared for the main event of the night. The main event of the night was a “fire” ceremony and was immidiately followed by art performances by each groups with no lighting except for the fire the students were surrounding. Around midnight, it was finally time to call it a night and the students went to sleep in their respective tents. Then, around 3 am in the morning, the students were woken up and gave the task to go on a mini scavenger-hunt-like adventure around the school in the dark. By the time all of the student’s groups have finished the adventures, the sun was already peeking and ready to rise anytime soon, so the students did their morning prayers, got ready, and did some morning workout together. At around 7 in the morning, a cooking competition was held where the students were given traditional soup ingridients that they can turn to any breakfast menu their creativity takes them. After finishing up breakfast, the students then change into their scout uniform to get ready for the closing ceremony and awarding session before going home.
The Arc asked the students to give their testimonies on the event in which two (Gwen ’25 and Thea ’25) responded :
Gwen ’25, “The PJ Roverscout was so much fun! It happened to be because I myself was a member of the “Dewan Ambalan’, so I already knew about the information regarding this activity beforehand. Maybe it was quite sudden for personal preparation (because I only packed a few hours before). I think other friends were like that too, but because SMA PJ itself hasn’t held a camp for a long time, this activity could revive the enthusiasm among friends. They also seemed to enjoy participating in the activities, so they could relive the scouting experience at school”.
Thea ’25, “The first time I found out about the camp was honestly quite surprising because we had just finished our exams and coincidentally I was a par of “Dewan Ambalan” who happened to be the one organizing the camp! But during the preparation, it was honestly quite fun. We prepared the games, and I also got a new experience where I had to create the “Ambalan” logo, which turned out to be quite challenging because each element had its own meaning, as did each color. In short, it was really complicated, but overall, I enjoyed it and was happy because I gained a lot of new knowledge. Then during the actual event, it was also very exciting. Even though it was tiring to be ready before the other friends arrived because we had to prepare the games and everything else, I understood there how to organize a camp event, what was needed, who needed permission, and much more! And of course, even though I’ve been learning scouting since elementary school, there are always new skills and knowledge that I gained from scouting activities, like setting up a tunnel tent, making a campfire, the procedure for patrol inauguration ceremonies, and more”.
The reawakening of this scout camp event is what was exactly needed to throw a little challenge, fun, and games towards the student so that they are able to workout physically to get refreshed after the final exam.
